ILLUMINATE’s partners gather in Essen for second Annual Consortium Meeting

News News

On 10–11 September 2026, the ILLUMINATE consortium gathered in Essen, Germany, for its second Annual Consortium Meeting, kindly hosted by the University Hospital Essen and the Erwin L. Hahn Institute.

The two-day meeting brought together project partners from across Europe to reflect on the progress made over the past year, discuss ongoing challenges, and align priorities for the next phase of the project. With a strong focus on scientific developments, clinical translation, and long-term sustainability, the meeting provided an opportunity to strengthen collaboration across the consortium.

Reflecting on progress and scientific achievements

The meeting opened with a welcome by Project Coordinator Dennis Klomp from the UMC Utrecht highlighting the objectives of the meeting: celebrate successes, dive into challenges, learn from STIC, ethics and advisory board feedback, and expand our network.

Our meeting host Tom Scheenen from University Hospital Essen introduced the location and the history of the hospital. Sophie Huiskes-Berends from Lygature provided an overview of the project's key achievements, setting the stage for discussions on progress across ILLUMINATE's six work packages.

Throughout the first day, work package representatives shared updates on ongoing activities, milestones, and challenges. Presentations covered the development and optimisation of metabolic MRI techniques, technological advancements and lutetium production, the clinical study, regulatory considerations, and activities supporting stakeholder engagement and project implementation.

The sessions highlighted the importance of close collaboration between the different work packages to ensure that scientific and technological developments can ultimately contribute to more personalised prostate cancer care. Alongside the presentations, a poster session during lunch provided an opportunity for researchers to showcase their research and exchange ideas.

Advancing clinical studies and incorporating expert feedback

A key focus of the meeting was the translation of ILLUMINATE's technological developments into the clinical study. During a dedicated breakout session, partners discussed the progress and challenges related to the clinical studies, with particular attention to the steps needed to advance clinical implementation.

The consortium also dedicated time for feedback from its Advisory Boards and Ethics Advisor. This session provided an opportunity to reflect on the project's scientific direction, clinical feasibility, and ethical considerations. The discussions reinforced the importance of addressing potential challenges early, maintaining realistic expectations, and ensuring that the different scientific and clinical activities remain closely aligned.

Looking ahead: sustainability and future opportunities

The second day focused on the long-term impact of ILLUMINATE. Following a recap of the discussion on day one, partners explored sustainability in a dedicated session led by Johan van den Brink from Philips and Sophie Huiskes-Berends from Lygature.

Discussions centred on how the knowledge, technologies, and collaborations developed within ILLUMINATE can continue to create value beyond the project's duration. Identifying opportunities for further research, collaboration, and implementation will be important to maximise the project's long-term impact.

Exploring innovation at the Hahn Institute

The Annual Meeting concluded with a visit to the 7T facilities at the Erwin L. Hahn Institute in Essen. The visit offered consortium members an opportunity to gain further insight into advanced MRI research and technology, connecting the scientific discussions from the meeting with practical developments in imaging.

After two days of presentations, discussions, and exchanges, the consortium left Essen with a shared understanding of the priorities ahead. We would like to thank all partners for their active participation and valuable contributions and extend a special thank you to University Hospital Essen and the Erwin L. Hahn Institute for hosting this year's Annual Consortium Meeting.
